Brace Technology & The Future

Scoliosis Journal report: Introduction to the "Scoliosis" Journal Brace Technology Thematic Series: increasing existing knowledge and promoting future developments.

Bracing is the main non-surgical intervention in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis during growth, in hyperkyphosis (and Scheuermann disease) and occasionally for spondylolisthesis; it can be used in adult scoliosis, in the elderly when pathological curves lead to a forward leaning posture or in adults after traumatic injuries. Bracing can be defined as the application of external corrective forces to the trunk; rigid supports or elastic bands can be used and braces can be custom-made or prefabricated.

The state of research in the field of conservative treatment is insufficient and while it can be stated that there is some evidence to support bracing, we must also acknowledge that today we do not have a common and generally accepted knowledge base, and that instead, individual expertise still prevails, giving rise to different schools of thought on brace construction and principles of correction. 

The only way to improve the knowledge and understanding of brace type and brace function is to establish a single and comprehensive source of information about bracing. This is what the Scoliosis Journal is going to do through the "Brace Technology" Thematic Series, where technical papers coming from the different schools will be published.

Curving again?

I have noticed just recently that I seem to be leaning left again and walking is becoming a real struggle, I only noticed this the other day when I had my jeans on and I saw myself in the mirror (not something I do very often especially as it is cold). I was shocked, my right side is fairly straight and flat (not too much flab) - my left side is almost folded in half and I can wedge my hand in between the fold that appears there - I look awful!!!!! Is it even possible for me to start curving again and my Scoliosis show signs again after a Harrington rod surgery 19 years ago? I never used to be conscious over my body years ago and I know it changes the older I get but I am no bigger than I was when I got married at age 24 and I am now 31, I hate my clothes I do not feel comfortable at all and I hate it when people look at me when I am walking down the street in a sideways crab walk!! Madonna's Daughter & Scoliosis

There have been recent reports that Madonna's daughter Lourdes Ciccone Ritchie has Scoliosis, there are photos flying around the internet that she has been spotted wearing a SpineCor brace, which is being widely used as bracing treatment for patients with Scoliosis. If this is true and Madonna's daughter does have Scoliosis then I wish the family all the best and hope that they can help treat Lourdes to avoid surgery....... I suppose the good thing for Lourdes is she will get the best of treatment for her Scoliosis and not have to put up with the NHS service, like I did! (where they use old material for Scoliosis surgery, they did it to me with the Harrington rod) But it does go to show that celebrities are like us in some ways and suffer from the same conditions that we do, which I suppose takes them off the pedestal for a little while - not that I am please Lourdes has Scoliosis - I wouldn't wish it on anyone!
