Scoliosis Screening Coming Back to Georgia!

Grady County Health officials have announced (23 January 2010) that they will be visiting middle schools during this semester to perform Scoliosis screenings. All I can say to that is yippeeee! I hope some of the awareness we are battling to create everyday is starting to make a difference, Scoliosis screening is a must and should be brought to schools across the World! A simple test can make a big diiference to children and could prevent the need for surgery. Prevention is always better than the cure, and as there is no cure for Scoliosis, screening is a must! The statistics for the United States claim that around 10% of children are affected by Scoliosis. Information about the screenings will be sent to parents about two weeks before the screenings take place.

Medtronic and SRS offer screening to 13,000 kids!

Medtronic and the Scoliosis Research Society launched Spine Check - a new program designed to help promote scoliosis screenings for middle school and junior high school students. The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), one of the world’s premier spine societies, and Medtronic are supporting the Spine Check program to help improve the overall spinal health of students. Because of a commitment to research and education in the field of spinal deformities, the organizations are working together to generate awareness of the condition, while offering resources to empower school nurses to perform screenings. Related content is also available to surgeons and other practitioners for use in facilitating community education. “In the United States, less than half of the 50 states currently legislate school screening. The purpose of school screening is to detect scoliosis at an early stage when the curve is mild and may even go unnoticed,” said Lawrence Lenke, MD, Jerome J. Gilden Endowed Professor o...

Pressure Patterns S2 | Scoliosis

Assessment of the centre of pressure pattern and moments about S2 in scoliotic subjects during normal walking Authors: Nachiappan Chockalingam, Surendra Bandi, Aziz Rahmatalla, Peter H Dangerfield and El-Nasri Ahmed Background Research employing gait measurements indicate asymmetries in ground reaction forces and suggest relationships between these asymmetries, neurological dysfunction and spinal deformity. Although, studies have documented the use of centre of pressure (CoP) and net joint moments in gait assessment and have assessed centre of mass (CoM)-CoP distance relationships in clinical conditions, there is a paucity of information relating to the moments about CoM. It is commonly considered that CoM is situated around S2 vertebra in normal upright posture and hence this study uses S2 vertebral prominence as reference point relative to CoM. Purpose To assess and establish, the asymmetry in the CoP pattern and moments about S2 vertebral prominence during level walking and its re...

Scoliosis Petition

A young lady on my group has started a petition. She is called Emma and has just under gone her correctional surgery for Scoliosis. Sign our Scoliosis Petition. Help to bring Scoliosis screening into schools. Emma’s petition is to help raise awareness about scoliosis and the need for testing in schools. To test a child for scoliosis will take less than a minute. If scoliosis is caught early enough, surgery as well as years of anguish and pain may be avoided. For many, all that is needed is a simple brace worn under clothing to help prevent the spine from twisting. Learn more about Emma and her Scoliosis story. Emma had surgery in March of this year and is now going through her recovery stage and is doing very well. Since discovering Scoliosis Emma wanted to start a petition to bring Scoliosis awareness to the forefront of people's minds, in an attempt to bring screening into schools across the UK. When my Scoliosis was diagnosed, it was first noticed in a school examination and th...
